Determining Cosmological Parameters from the Microwave Background
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recently funded satellites will map the cosmic microwave background radiation with unprecedented sensitivities and angular resolutions. Assuming only primordial adiabatic scalar and tensor perturbations, we evaluate how accurately experiments of this type will measure the basic cosmological parameters Ω (the total density of the Universe), Ωb (the baryon density), h (the Hubble constant), and Λ (the cosmological constant). The proposed experiments are capable of measuring Ωb to around 10% accuracy and the other parameters at the few-percent level. We briefly discuss the generality of these estimates and complications arising in actual data analysis. To appear in Proceedings of the UCLA Dark Matter ’96 Conference.

متن کاملConstraining Cosmology with High Convergence Regions in Weak Lensing Surveys
We propose to use a simple observable, the fractional area of “hot spots” in weak gravitational lensing mass maps which are detected with high significance, to determine background cosmological parameters. Because these high-convergence regions are directly related to the physical nonlinear structures of the universe, they derive cosmological information mainly from the nonlinear regime of dens...
متن کاملEfficient Cosmological Parameter Estimation from Microwave Background Anisotropies
We revisit the issue of cosmological parameter estimation in light of current and upcoming highprecision measurements of the cosmic microwave background power spectrum. Physical quantities which determine the power spectrum are reviewed, and their connection to familiar cosmological parameters is explicated. We present a set of physical parameters, analytic functions of the usual cosmological p...
متن کاملContributions to the Power Spectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background from Fluctuations Caused by Clusters of Galaxies
We estimate the contributions to the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) power spectrum from the static and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effects, and from the moving cluster of galaxies (MCG) effect. We conclude, in agreement with other studies, that at sufficiently small scales secondary fluctuations caused by clusters provide important contributions to the CMBR. At l ∼> 3000, th...
متن کاملCosmic Microwave Background Observations as a Way to Discriminate among Inflation Models
There has been great interest recently in the topic of parameter reconstruction from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Most of the emphasis in the literature is on the question of determining cosmological parameters such as the density Ω0, the Hubble constant H0, or the value of the cosmological constant Λ. The purpose of this talk is to take a different approach and apply the machinery of...
